MORE THAN 40 MEN NATIONWIDE TO PARTICIPATE IN CONFERENCE ON CARING FOR WOMEN WITH BREAST CANCER

National Male Caregivers Conference August 24-26 in Baltimore, MD

BETHESDA, MD, August 8, 2007- Men Against Breast Cancer (MABC), the first national non-profit organization that educates men to be effective caregivers in the fight against breast cancer, will bring more than 40 men from around the country to a special conference in Baltimore on August 24-26. Launched last year, the two-day program teaches men innovative ways to navigate the breast cancer crisis with proven problem-solving techniques, create an environment of sharing and networking among men and to demonstrate ways for men to improve the quality of survivorship for the person they love.

"We were overwhelmed by the incredible response last year and are thrilled to be hosting the conference again," said Marc Heyison, MABC President and Co-Founder. "With attendees from more than 18 states, it will prove to once again be a 'melting pot' of men who came together from different backgrounds, faced with the same problem, and left as one."

The conference will focus on managing the crisis of breast cancer with a proven problem-solving technique; provide an ongoing forum for men in similar situations to get to know one another and develop a support network; and detail steps to take to improve the quality of survivorship of the patient. To be held at the Tremont Plaza Hotel in downtown Baltimore, conference sessions will include exercises aimed at examining the similarities and differences between men and women, and ones that identify specific problems men experience with women. Alumni from last year's program will address the group by describing how they've become better caregivers as a result of the techniques learned at the conference.

The program will be led by Matthew J. Loscalzo, MSW, with 26 years of experience in the field. For nine years, Loscalzo served as the director of patient and family services and co-director of the comprehensive cancer pain service at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and Johns Hopkins Oncology Center in Baltimore.

"We've seen clinical proof that in addition to timely, quality medical care, having an educated and skilled male partner positively impacts the woman's mental well being which in turn enhances survivorship," said Loscalzo. "And we have several men returning this year because the program works."

"I remember checking in last year and receiving a bunch of materials from the MABC staff," said Barry Allen, a resident of Bowie, Maryland who is returning to this year's conference. "I started reading the materials and immediately called my wife and started bawling. It's exactly what I needed for so long - a good outlet to finally let go of all the emotion and pain."

About Men Against Breast Cancer (MABC)
Men Against Breast Cancer, is the first national non-profit organization providing targeted support services and programs to educate and empower men to be effective caregivers when breast cancer strikes a female loved one. In recognizing the devastating effects on the entire family, MABC's philosophy is to leverage support of each family member to help the patient, with special emphasis on the important role of the husband/partner. In 2003, MABC received a Centers for Disease Control grant for its "Partners In Survival Program," the first-ever grant awarded for educating men on how to provide critical day-to-day emotional, mental and physical support and care. MABC's educational materials are available in hundreds of hospitals and health care institutions in the U.S. and internationally. More information is available at www.menagainstbreastcancer.org or 1-866-547-MABC (6222).
